LSHS Students

In Mr. Joshua Sparks’ algebra class, students are turning math into a delicious experience with a hands-on project that combines learning and fun. This week, the classroom buzzed with excitement as students used M&M candies to create and analyze histograms.

As part of a project-based learning assignment, each student received a packet of M&Ms and began counting the candies to find the mean, median, and mode of their colorful treats. The goal? To compare their results with those of their classmates and see if the number of M&Ms varied between packets.

This project not only makes math tangible, but also teaches students the importance of data collection and analysis. By using M&Ms, students can visualize statistical concepts in a way that’s engaging and memorable.

Students worked in pairs, sharing their findings and discussing the differences in their candy counts. As they created histograms to represent their data, they learned how to interpret and present statistical information effectively. The project not only reinforced their understanding of mathematical concepts, but also fostered collaboration and critical thinking skills.
