STEM students recently got to interact with engineers and others from Georgia Power and Gas South during a problem-based learning project about severe weather.
Lithia Springs 2010 alumna Silvia Razo, an engineer and project manager with Southern Company Gas helped arrange the visit with more than 200 students at Lithia on February 24. The visit was part of HOLA-GA, Southern Company Gas’s Georgia chapter of the employee resource group.
Students heard from workforce development experts, engineers and fleet department workers from Georgia Power and Gas South. They also got a hands-on tour of an all-electric pickup truck used by Georgia Power.
Lithia STEM Coordinator Nicole Oliver-Wynn said representatives from both companies will visit the school over the next several weeks as they work on their severe-weather project.
Additional elements of the project include building apps directing people to resources during severe weather, creating an emergency triage plan, and other facets centered around the three pathways offered at Lithia—engineering, computer science with cybersecurity, and biomedical science.
The project will culminate with a visit to Gas South's "Gastown" campus in Riverdale later in the spring.
